Which Consumes Less Energy? AC Fan on or in Auto?

During the summer, operating your air conditioning can be your largest monthly utility expense. So, it’s only natural that you’re checking for ways to consume less energy. That may entail finding an energy-efficient AC setting or even making the switch to an ENERGY STAR®-rated model through air conditioner installation.

Modifying your air conditioning’s fan setting is another way you can save money.

Your air conditioner uses a fan to deliver the cold air it makes. You adjust this fan at your thermostat by switching it to “auto,” which means the fan will only work when the air conditioner is working. Or you can set it to “on,” which means it will run continuously.

Does putting your AC on “fan” save energy in Franklin & South Indy? Not necessarily. Generally, running your air conditioner’s fan all day is going to drive up your energy bill slightly.

But it also gives a few pluses (and downsides) when it comes to your residence’s comfort. Here’s why.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “On”

Having your air conditioner’s fan operate continuously can better equalize your house’s comfort. This is great if you have a two-story home, since areas upstairs can be warmer. It’s also ideal if you have issues with unbalanced cooling on account of hot and cold areas.

It’s also great if one of your family members deals with allergies, asthma or other respiratory symptoms. That’s since the air is consistently being circulated and purified. On the other hand, you may have to put in new air filters more often.

Having the fan on constantly can also make your energy bills more expensive. It could also result in the fan wearing out sooner and need air conditioning repair.

Your house may also seem muggier. Air conditioning helps control humidity by clearing moisture from the air. But if the fan is continually on, it’s more difficult for moisture to flow from the condenser outdoors.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “Auto”

This is the most energy-efficient setting, since the fan will only go when your air conditioner does. It’s good if your house always seems the right temperature, no matter what spot you’re in.

There are a few drawbacks to using the auto setting. You might experience hot and cold locations in your residence and decreased air quality. This is because air isn’t continuously flowing or being constantly filtrated.

That said, you’ll use less energy and won’t be required to change your air filter as often. Both are savings that can add up throughout the year, so you’ll have to think over what’s ideal for your family.
